Well, DJ Hero 2 came out a coupe days ago, and I had a chance to play it, and so here is my review!
First off, we were promised a less hip-hop heavy setlist, but at least the rap music included is stuff I like. The setlist includes virtually no rock or techno, but we have a heavy amount of DLC coming, and this time SD_ARC is available!
The thing that saddened me was the graphics. Back in 2006, Activision was more than happy to push the ticket on graphics for Guitar Hero 1. Realistic animations, AWESOME lighting, very good shadow maps, and many different audio channels appearing at once. And lets not include the MASSIVE crowd, many moving props on stage, and other various things. The PS2 had a few minor issues with keeping up, but it was mostly with disc read speed. Also, the game ran at a staggering 27FPS. Now we have the nintendo wii, a console much stronger than the PS2, and we are scared to touch it. DJ Hero 2 uses a fake crowd (2D sprites with minimal animation), lowered resolution (to 640x480, compared to the 800x600 on DJ Hero 1), and virtually no lighting effects, and no shadows. The game runs at 59FPS (the max for the wii). It truely saddens me on this front. The Wii can handle much more than its being put up for. I think we have another PsPort on our hands (like we did with GH3), where they take a crap PS2 version, and recode it for the wii, leaving the graphics untouched.
Aside from that, we have all new stuff to do! Freestyle scratch, freestyle crossfade, freestyle sampling (and it uses pieces from the song too!), backscratches, held notes, and other things. So now there is a much harder, but much more fun element to this game! The music is all stuff from 2-5 years back, and even some oldies! A mostly rap setlist on disc, but a good amount of techno/rock dlc coming in november.
The NWFC is improved VASTLY from DJ Hero 1, actually keeping the connection going for the whole setlist (havent been dropped yet), and lag is no longer an occurance. There is now battles, but attacks arent around anymore. Instead, only 1 user gets to freestyle. Whoever uses the freestyle zone first, gets it, and gets a giant advantage on points for that checkpoint.
Last but no least, we get another feature from the guitar hero franchise, PARTY MODE! Party mode just plays random songs and allows up to 3 users to jump in and out of gameplay. 2 DJ's, and 1 singer. For some strange reason, singing is only allowed in party mode. At any rate, 0 players are required for party mode, so you can just let the game play music if you like!
This concludes my review, so here comes the ratings!
Graphics: 4/10
Gameplay: 9/10
Multiplayer: 8/10
Controller: 9/10
Music: 8/10
Replay Value: 9/10
Online: 7/10
